Ring Rats: A Love Story
by Ed Gonzales on Sunday, May 20, 2012 at 6:05pm ยท
So earlier today, I was on Facebook, feelin a little froggy, and someone decided to write something about their hatred for a tried and true tradition in professional wrestling, I made a short joke about it, then suddenly I was attacked for my comment. I tried to explain to them, that they had no clue what they were even talking about, again...I was attacked and even insulted! So I decided, to write a short little note here on Facebook to explain to said people...why their original comment deserved my smart ass reply and why I am still justified in what I have to say...
First and foremost... instead of bitching about some little tiny thing in the world of professional wrestling...make sure you have earned an opinion. Buying a ring, renting a building, and booking some of the worst "wrestlers" in the area to do a show for free by the way does not earn you a chance to have an opinion. On a personal level I actually really like some of the people I am talking about, on a professional level...well... let's just say I wish no positive things in their direction....
Now on to the meat of the Note....
Rats.....
Some time in the recent years, Rats, Ring Rats, Arena Rats or whatever you want to call them have gotten a bad rep... and most of it, is because so few people actually know what a Rat is.
Most people believe that a "Ring Rat" is someone that sleeps with the boys, and to an extent they are right, but only partially. Ya see, in this business, long before all you had to do was go to highspots.com, buy a ring, buy some gear(or just go to a Hot Topic), and call yourself a professional wrestler, long before you wrestled in the same town every week for zero dollars, long before you could just call yourself a wrestler and magically be one, there were people... people who busted their asses everyday of the week, slept in their cars, ate loser lunches, set up rings, tore down rings, and got actually got paid for their work. Most of the people I am talking about are going to read that and go "man, I heard about those days... oh well...mom can you book me as heavyweight champion this week?".
In those days, and for a select few in these days, those were the way of the land. Ya see after you've busted your ass in the ring, put on a GOOD WRESTLING show, and made some money (money kids, are these little green pieces of paper real promoters give you after a job well done), the last thing you wanted to do, was spend the money you just earned...plus if you spend it all on booze, how are you going to afford to get to the next town? (ya see kids, there was a time when you didn't just wrestle in the same building in front of the same 36 fans for no money).
So how did you afford to live when you were on the road so much? Enter, the Ring Rat. Ya see people, the Ring Rat wasn't just someone who sucked you and your buddy off on your way to the hotel (a hotel kids, is a big building that you sleep in when you wrestle in multiple towns that ARE NOT right down the road from your house). The Ring Rat took care of ya, she bought your drinks, paid for your gas, touched you in nice places, and made sure you made it to the next town (ya see kids, you didn't just wrestle in a building, go home upload it on YouTube and jerk off to because you're so awesome, you actually had to continue to wrestle the rest of the week in other places). She was the person that HELPED you in this business.
The promoter wasn't gonna help you, he was gonna try to pay (kids, pay is the same thing as money) you as little as humanly possible, the other wrestlers are not going to help you, they want your spot... so there was that wonderful lady there to assist you.
The reason I believe Ring Rats have such a bad rep these days, is because just like 98.7% of the wrestlers around here, they got lazy. They got lazy because all the shitty wrestlers around here got lazy. How can a Rat pay for your hotel when you live 2 blocks away from the building and never go anywhere else? How can a Rat pick up your tab at the bar when you are only 17 years old and call yourself a wrestler because mommy and daddy bought a ring? How can a Rat do her appointed duties when she has no reason to? So she got lazy... lazy just like the rest of you play wrestlers. If you don't have to work hard to have the right to call yourself a wrestler, why does she have to work hard to get laid?
It's like this, most people think Rats are just someone who sleeps with the boys. Back in the day however the Rats earned the privilege to sleep with the boys as a thank you for all the hard work she had done.
So there you have it folks... the history of the REAL Ring Rat. A woman who actually loved the business, a woman who took care of the boys when no one else would, a woman who actually helped a ton of the people you enjoy watching wrestle make it in this business today....now is that someone you want to rid from your life? Well I guess I should look at who I am asking... most people have already eliminated good wrestling, money, and pride from this business so why not add Ring Rats to the list too!
Love,
Ed
